San Francisco – US Destination of the week
San Francisco boasts many personalities, from the colorful Castro District to bohemian Haight-Ashbury. And the 16 million people who visit here each year certainly seem to like it that way–in fact, San Francisco was the third most-visited U.S. city by international travelers in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Travel and Tourism Industries.

The City by the Bay is a culinary jewel that provides countless options for dining out, one of the top activities for international travelers to the U.S. Savor mouthwatering sourdough bread and fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf, then ride one of San Francisco’s historic California Street cable cars to Nob Hill for stunning views of the San Francisco Bay. Explore Alcatraz Island, where rare wildlife and idyllic scenery stand in contrast to the infamous former prison. Later, walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to take in spectacular city vistas.
Once you’ve had your fill of the city’s bustle, San Francisco makes a great home base for traveling through Northern California’s famed wine country, just a short trip north of the city limits.
