Motown Winter Blast Begins Feb. 2, 2006
During the week leading up to Super Bowl XL and more specifically Super Bowl Weekend, there will be a number of fun and exciting activities taking place in and around Detroit.
Most notable of these events is the Detroit-based extravaganza known as the Motown Winter Blast. In its second year, Motown Winter Blast begins Thursday, February 2 and runs until Sunday, February 5, 2006 and will feature such exciting familiy oriented events as snowshoeing, ice skating, Model-T rides, a 200-ft long snow slide, ice sculptures, dog sledding and the best local music and restaurants in Metro Detroit. There will also be an outdoor music stage with top national entertainers, a marketplace of artists and vendors, more lanes on the popular snow slide, snowboarding demonstrations and more. Last year’s inaugural celebration of the event drew more than 200,000 people.
Family Fun …
When you enter Ford Motor Company’s Family Fun Zone get ready to explore the family-friendly entertainment and activities by riding in historic Model Ts. Stop by the ice skating rink at Campus Martius,. All weekend long, enjoy performances by the Detroit Skate Club’s Synchronized Skating Team and Junior National Competitors. You also can meet former hockey greats from the Detroit Red Wings, or become the next Michelle Kwan by signing up for a lesson. Skating is complimentary, courtesy of Ford Motor Company. Or visit the Snow Slide — a day at the Motown Winter Blast wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the snow slide. It is bound to be a hit again this year, with more lanes to accommodate adults and children who will be lining up for this thrill ride.
Dog Sled races
Michigan.org brings the state’s outdoor tradition to the Woodward corridor with a winter wonderland environment. Michigan.org is hosting the dog sled races, snowshoe walking and snow hills. Kids of all ages will enjoy the 200-foot snow slide. Six Michigan kennels will have their dogs compete in sled races. After these exhibition races, be sure to check out these dogs at the petting area where you can visit the dogs and their handlers.
Taste of Detroit
If you are looking for a warm up during the day, check out the Taste of Detroit, or the newest addition to the Motown Winter Blast, the Detroit Marketplace. The Chrysler Jeep Dodge Taste of Detroit will bring warmth to the event with caterers and restaurants around metro Detroit providing delectable treats. The Detroit Marketplace is a great addition to this winter celebration; it will be housed in a unique and large heated tent with arts, crafts and other goods for sale from more than 35 area vendors.
Music, Music, Music
This celebration of Motown wouldn’t be complete without music. There will be five stages dedicated to the eclectic sounds of music originating in Detroit. Bands from around the metro area will be performing throughout the day, as well as headliners taking the main stage outside. So, come on down and rock and roll to the sounds of Motown, dance, eat and be merry with thousands of out-of-towners and local metro Detroiters celebrating the biggest party and sporting event in all of 2006.
