Helicopter, Sled, Kayak, Train And Tram — Grandtravelers Use Them All During 14-Day Exploration Of Alaska

Grandtravel’s 14-day exploration of Alaska makes use of a unique combination of transport modes — landing on a glacier in a helicopter, ‘mushing’ in a sled drawn by Alaskan Huskies, dining aboard a luxury domed railcar as the stunning scenery of Denali National Park passes by, cruising along the Chena and Tanana Rivers on a sternwheeler riverboat and soaring 2,000 feet above Juneau aboard the Mount Robert’s Tramway. Three departures are slated for summer 2005.

Focusing on outdoor fun, grandparents and grandchildren use sea kayaks in Resurrection Bay, pan for gold, fish for Kenai Salmon, whale-watch in Icy Strait, get close-up views of “calving” icebergs and take in a bush pilot’s air show. Visits to Old Chena Village, the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the University of Alaska Museum provide a detailed picture of Eskimo life, of how Aleuts, Tlingits, Haidas, Tsimshians and other Arctic peoples survived and enriched the Alaskan culture with their customs and their artistry.

Special meals and entertainment evoke Alaskan life, past and present: a salmon bake, dinners at Fairbanks’s Palace Theater to see the Golden Heart Revue — the story of the founding of Fairbanks told through comedy and song — and in a gold-mining mill in Anchorage, lunch in Denali’s Kantishna Roadhouse and at the top of the Mount Robert’s Tramway. The state’s incredible array of wildlife is showcased in visits to the Alaska Big Game Park — deer, moose, bison, reindeer and caribou — and the new Alaska SeaLife Center, where puffins and sea lions swim inches away from participants.

The Alaska adventure is priced at $7,480 per adult and child 12-17, double, $7,280 for triples, and $7,260and $6,480 for children 7-11, respectively. Included are deluxe accommodations, meals, transportation, admission to all scheduled attractions and events, en route activities for children, pre-departure guidance, the services of a professional tour manager, a Grandtravel Activities Director (always an experienced educator or youth counselor), service charges and hotel taxes.
