This annual sand sculpting competition stemmed from the works of world renowned sand sculptor Greg Grady. In 2000, Greg was assigned to create a replica of the new tail side edition of the New Hampshire quarter out of ten tons of sand during the Hampton Beach Children's Festival in celebration of the release of the quarter. The presentation was so impressive that the following year the first annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpture Competition began.
