Thousands Have Perished

No one knows yet how many have died. The initial estimate was a few hundred but the number kept climbing as th reality dawned. It is estimated that the casulaty toll wil reach 50,000 as the rubble is cleared and bodies are counted. In addition to fatalities, there have been hundreds of thousands of injuries and over a million people have been affected by the massive earthquake that has hit the northern areas of Pakistan, Kashmir, India and Afghanistan. Most of the devastation has occured in the Northwest Frontier of Pakistan and the Pakistani administered Kashmir. Rescuers have been struggling to reach remote, mountainous areas after Pakistan’s worst-ever earthquake wiped out entire villages, buried roads in rubble and knocked out electricity and water supplies.

IDRF has launched a fundraising campaign to restore the lives of the survivors. Apart from immediate relief, a huge reconstruction effort is required to rebuild homes, roads, hospitals and schools. When tsunami hit Asia last year, IDRF had set a target of $1,000,000 to help the survisors. Thanks to your support that the target was met and your donations are now helping us in the reconstruction efforts in the Aceh province of Indonesia. We have set the same target to help those who have barely survived the devastation brought by the earthquake. We are confident that we will meet this target with your help.
