What’s New in the Bahamas, with a Spotlight on Ragged Island

Although it’s one of the smallest islands in The Bahamas, fishermen say it plays host to the best bone fishing around. Ragged Island is part of a long chain of islands that stretch from the southern tip of Long Island, nearly all the way to Cuba. The island itself is just 24 square-kilometres and is located in the southern Bahamas. It is believed to have once been home to a pirate’s lair as well as a Spanish fort. Points such as Blackbeard’s Bay and Blackbeard’s Well, located on the western part of the island, hint that the well-known pirate may once have had his headquarters in the area. The well is situated on a hill that overlooks nearly the entire island – the perfect place to keep a lookout for enemy ships. It is also believed that Christopher Columbus stopped on the island during his initial voyage to the New World in 1492.

London Olympic Truce Campaign Gathers Strength – What You Can Do

London 2012 – IIPT (International Institute of Peace Through Tourism) is proud to be a partner in the global campaign promoting the 2012 Olympic Truce (‘Ekechereia’). The campaign builds on the historic UN resolution this past October calling for a global truce during the period of the Olympic Games.  The tradition of the Olympic Truce dates back to 776 BC, on the occasion of the first recorded Olympic Games in ancient Greece. City-states decided to cease all warfare and endorse Truce thus sending a message of peace and fair play. During the Truce, athletes, artists and their families, as well as ordinary pilgrims, could travel in total safety to participate in or attend the Olympic Games and return afterwards to their respective countries.

Wroclaw, Poland, Organizes the World Games 2017

Olympic Games at non-Olympic sports for the first time in history will be held in Poland. Wroclaw defeated, among others Cape Town and Budapest in the competition to host this event in 2017. World Games is an event which takes place one year after the Summer Olympics, having the task of promoting non-Olympic disciplines and introduce them to the Olympics. Participants will compete for medals in 37 disciplines such as karate, parachuting, archery, gymnastics, sumo, rock climbing, squash, bowling, billiards or dance sports.
