Spring springs in Mexico
by Jimm Budd:
Jacaranda trees turned the central Mexico highlands purple this weekend, welcoming in March, and, it is hoped, springtime. Winter in the highlands has been unusually cold and, more unusual, rainy. Some parts of Mexico City and its suburbs were flooded as rainstorms struck when drainage systems were closed and being repaired.
Among the rites of spring is the annual Mexico City festival, which starts March 14. The final week is Semana Santa, Holy Week, with schools, offices and, as April arrives, even the government closing down for a few days. Everyone in Mexico will be on a brief or extended vacation.
