SEE ITALY IN THE STYLE OF A BYGONE ERA IN A VINTAGE CAR
Italy by Vintage Car now offers two exciting city break itineraries, both starting and ending in Rome: The Sannio Wine Country and the Abruzzo Region. Both itineraries offer travelers the chance to see parts of Italy rarely seen by visitors, all in Rome’s backyard.
ABRUZZO, THE UNDISCOVERED HEART OF ITALY is a perfect extension to any trip to Rome. A quick jaunt through the heart of Italy’s Lazio and Abruzzo regions, it includes visits to the frescoed Monastery of San Benedetto in Subiaco, the gardens of Villa d’Este in Tivoli, a guided sightseeing tour of L’Aquila with a private tour of the castle and lunch in Antrodoco and Amatrice, where pasta Amatriciana was created.
Both nights are spent at the remarkable 5-star Sextantio Hotel, 30 rooms set amongst the historic buildings of the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. The hotel’s buildings are all high atop the mountain overlooking the burgh’s square by the Porta Medicea, or Medicean Gate.
$4,890 per person based on double occupancy and two people per vehicle.
THE SANNIO, A LAND OF PASSION AND EXCELLENCE explores a region still undiscovered by tourists, where Aglianico, Solopaca, Greco di Tufo, Sannio and Guardiolo wines are produced. After an introduction to the cars, guests visit the village of Scanno which is known for its fine filigrana jewelry making. Then it’s off to San Lorenzello, a village of 400 inhabitants and 10 ceramic workshops, and Castelvenere, where wine has been produced for centuries, going underground into the many hand-carved stone cellars. For the spa lover, a visit to Telese Terme, well-known since pre-Roman times for the curative properties of its sulfurous spring water, is a must.
Nights are spent at the Aquapetra Resort & Spa, a family-owned luxury retreat that has been built from the ruins of an ancient hamlet. Each room is unique and features views of the surrounding countryside. The world-class spa features an indoor panoramic heated pool, various saunas, water jets and treatment pools, while outside, the lake-like infinity pool offers views of a nearby olive grove.
