Hamshushalayim Festival Brings Food, Music and Art to Jerusalem in December 2010

Jerusalem will see some additional excitement this winter with the Hamshushalayim Festival, featuring outdoor events, street theater, musical performances and interactive night tours for three consecutive weekends, beginning December 2.

From December 2-4, December 9-11 and December 16-18, the Hamshushalayim festival–”Hamshush” is Hebrew vernacular for the long Israeli weekend from Thursday to Saturday–will provide travelers with free entry to several tourist and cultural attractions in the city, including the Israel Museum, the Science Museum, the Bible Lands Museum, the Museum of Italian Jewry, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Tower of David Museum and the City of David, as well as the Davidson Center and the Old City Walls Promenade.

Each weekend will also feature special performances, including: an a capella concert at the Scottish Church; Shlomo Gronich and the Shaba band at the Confederation House; the Shahriar Band and a Turkish music concert at the Museum of Islamic Art; rock music performances and Greek festivities at the Lab (HaMaabada); Russian folk songs at the Tower of David and music recitals at the Convent of the Sisters of Zion.

“Hamshushalayim highlights the long-standing Israeli tradition of weekend entertainment,” says Haim Gutin, Israel Commissioner of Tourism, North and South America, “and will bring additional excitement to the winter weekends in Jerusalem.”

The weekends will also feature a culinary festival offering prix fixe menu options and specials at some of Jerusalem’s leading restaurants, cafes and pubs.
