India’s Haryana Tourism Minister Plans The State SurajKund Craft Mela Full Of Festvities

Chandigarh, March 27-On the pattern of Surajkund Crafts Mela a ten days event in the name of Oasis Kraft Mela will be organized from 28th March to 6th April, 2007 at the Oasis Tourist Complex at Uchana (Karnal).

The Mela which is the 5th in the row, will be inaugurated by Shri Prem Prashant IAS Chief Secretary Haryana on 28th March, 2007 at 5.30 P.M.

This was revealed by Smt. Kiran Choudhry, Minister of State for Tourism and Forest (Independent charge). The Minister stated that craftspersons from different parts of the country will be participating in the mela which is a joint venture of Haryana Tourism, D.C.Handicrafts and Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

While giving more details about the events, the Minister stated that the purpose of the mela is to provide the craftspersons and weavers to showcase their arts and crafts and to provide them an avenue for marketing their crafts.

Besides this the rich cultural heritage of Haryana will be highlighted through the performances being given by the cultural troupes. The special features of the present mela is the participation of large number of Haryaan Self Help Groups formed by the DRDA and the Women & Child Development Department, Haryana through the financial linkages with the NABARD and the other banks.

This Mela will give an opportunity to the Self Help Groups to market their product. Thus the mela can be said as an first of its kind to project Haryana Tourism for making the Self Help Groups self sufficient by providing them a forum to sell their products at reasonably good rates thereby giving an impetus for self employment and poverty alleviation programmes being run by the Government of India Near about 200 craftspersons from different sections of the society will be participating in the mela.

The visitors will have food, games, fun and frolic besides having a chance for purchasing the goods of artistic and exquisite beauty. Haryana Tourism is supported by an effort of Punjab National Bank and various help groups formed by DRDA and the women Child Development Department, Haryana. Good Food and exquisite shopping extravaganza at Oasis. Day performers will also be an attraction for the domestic and foreign tourists/ visitors.
