Explore Through the South of Iceland by Horseback
South of Iceland offers the most variety of all parts of Iceland: volcano, glaciers, hot springs, among them geysir, waterfalls you can walk behind, black beach, natural thermal baths, lava caves… the list is endless!
Most visitors to the South Iceland region explore the Golden Circle with the world famous Geysir and Gullfoss, the magnificient waterfall. South Iceland also has two other great waterfalls - Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss. Visitors can walk behind one of them and enjoy an exhilirating moment.
In South Icleand travelers can visit the South Coast with its beatiful and charming old villages. Among popular activities is the natural themal bath at Landmannalaugar or snow mobiling at the glacier Mýrdalsjökull. Þórsmörk is yet another unique place to visit and stay, endless hiking routes and breathtaking landscape.
Jökulsárlón on the other hand offers an intriguing sight of huge icebergs, floating on the water. Reynisfjara, which is a beach with coal black sand and huge cliffs is something not to be missed according to the locals. Last but not least, volcano Hekla, which is best to visit on horseback offers to the first timers an unforgettable experience. Travelers can go for a riding tour starting at local horse farm Hestheimar or opt for a week-long riding tour e.g. along the glacier river, Þjórsá, in the highlands of Iceland.
As to locals proudly state every visitior falls in love with Iceland as well as the Icelandic horse, which has friendly and stable character. No wonder that South Iceland abounds with many horse breeding farms and riding schools.
