France Guide 2004

Maison de la France, The French Government Tourist Office, invites North Americans to visit France and “Make It Your Own” with the 2004 edition of FranceGuide.  The complimentary 96-page travel planner is available in both English and Spanish. It offers readers enchanting itineraries throughout France with new places to discover, fun for the family, and active vacation ideas for every American traveler. This year’s FranceGuide also conveys the country’s heartfelt gratitude to U.S. WWII veterans and a warm welcome to their fellow citizens.

FranceGuide 2004 takes an introspective look at the WWII Allied landings that took place in Normandy, with an extensive section on the 60th Anniversary of D-Day, coming up this June 6, 2004. It includes a letter from René Garrec—a Normandy resident and President of the Regional Council of Lower Normandy—to his eight-year old grandson about the significance of this anniversary and what is owed to U.S. veterans, “It is thanks to them that today you play peacefully in your backyard…far from the horrors of war… we will say to them ‘Thank you, and welcome to Normandy.’” The section also features a moving and very personal speech given by another Normandy resident, Anne d’Ornano, President of the Calvados General Council, at a reception honoring D-Day veterans, held last November in New York in anticipation of the 60th Anniversary of D-Day.

Alain Ducasse sets the pace in his “Many Countries of France” introduction. Peter Mayle gives the “Last Word” in “The Truffles I’ve Seen.”  American author and member of the Order of the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, Stephen McCauley, talks about his relationship with French readers and France’s influence on the rest of the world.  Internationally-acclaimed actor Isaach De Bankolé discusses his life-changing experience crossing the street in St-Germain-des-Prés.

The elegant magazine-style FranceGuide also contains a wealth of material on Paris, including an insightful article on the American love affair with Paris, a retrospective on famous African-Americans who made their mark on the City of Light and some useful tips on how visitors can make the most of their euros.

In addition to highlighting the varied regions of France and famous cities like Lyon and Cannes, this year’s FranceGuide also includes some useful tips on making the most of any French vacation. Find out what is beyond the flat pebble beaches of Nice. See firsthand what goes on behind the scenes in a French restaurant through the Ecole des Chefs program of Relais & Châteaux. Find out why train travel offers such a unique and beloved way to see la belle France.  Learn about the France that lies beyond Europe, including Martinique, French Guiana, French Polynesia, Guadeloupe, St. Barths and St. Martin.

With practical information, insider tips, suggested itineraries and more, the comprehensive FranceGuide is the perfect tool for travelers looking to plan a memorable France vacation.
