Mediterranea: The Worldwide Festival of Underwater Images in France
From February 25-28, 2010 Antibes Juan-Les Pins will host “Mediterranea-the worldwide festival of underwater images and adventure.” This will undoubtedly be one of the most beautiful displays of the “world of silence” and exploration. This event is part of a strong tradition in the city that has welcomed many of the pioneers of diving, starting with the famous Commandant Cousteau. Incidentally, the Calypso was built in Antibes boatyards, in the early ’50s.

Mediterranea Festival aims at being more than just a festival for photographers or video directors. Cousteau Society/Equipe Cousteau is the organizer of this 2010 edition, which is geared toward environmental protection and the discovery of the world-both on the land and in the sea. Antibes-Juan-Les-Pins cares deeply for these subjects and, through this festival, aims to increase public awareness on environmental issues, and to promote a better understanding of our planet.

A sustainable festival
“Mare medi terra,” the sea in the middle of lands… Considered as the center of the world throughout the ages, between Africa, Asia, and Europe, the Mediterranean Sea has played a major part in history. As the cradle of many civilizations, the sea also hosts one of the richest marine and coastal ecosystems on the planet. This ecosystem is particularly threatened at the moment, but it is not enough just to list the problems-it is more than ever necessary to make people aware of them, especially the youth. In Antibes, everyone will be able to see through vivid images how urgent it is to protect this fragile environment, which has already been so damaged by men.
During the festival, marine-life enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see a variety of films, documentaries, slide shows, photographs, and all sorts of informational stands (books, travel, diving clubs, diving materials, etc.)
Eco-Conference
Economic stakes and the protection of the Mediterranean environment
During “Mediterranea – worldwide festival of underwater images and adventure,” some of the world’s best marine biologists and environmental scientists will come to share their experiences and discuss the environmental issues that threaten the Mediterranean marine environment. There will be speeches based on this year’s theme: “Economic stakes and the protection of the Mediterranean environment.”
The richness of these debates lies not only in the quality of the orators and their subjects, but also in their multidisciplinary approach. Scientists, developers/contractors, lawyers, ocean experts, administrators of protected areas will all come together to present their ideas and observations, and to engage in roundtable discussions to share their point of view and to reflect on solutions.
