Discover the New Vulcania in France

Vulcania is a theme park and research institute dedicated to volcanoes in the mountains of the Auvergne, in central France. The 136 acre development, which is housed inside an extinct volcano and former military base, was designed by Austrian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Hans Hollein.

It aims to offer visitors an “educational and recreational journey into volcanoes and earth science.” Over two-thirds of the built area are located underground, defined by a man-made volcanic cone rising 100 feet into the air.

Visitors safely experience volcanoes by taking the Magma Explorer vessel, which travels through the belly of a replicated volcano, with its jets of steam, incandescent light, and magma streams. A surprise-filed voyage includes earthquakes, short stops, sharp descents and inclines, as well changes of temperature.  There are educational films and multimedia installations that explore how volcanoes effect civilization. One emerges to the beautiful landscape of the Auvergne, after a stimulating trip underground full of volcanoes’ smells, sounds, and images.
