Major Museum Developments in England’s North Country for 2010

The fascinating early history of York – the Capital of the North of England – is to be told through groundbreaking research and internationally important collections at the newly refurbished Yorkshire Museum, opening August 2010. The might of the Romans, the power of the Vikings and the wealth and romance of the medieval period will be revealed following an investment of ВЈ2 million which will totally transform the interior of this remarkable building. The new look museum will also include a learning level and a stunning audio visual introduction to the History of York in a 300 seat auditorium.

The JORVIK Viking Centre will reopen in February 2010 following a ВЈ1 million refurbishment. The new centre will incorporate an underfoot reconstruction of the original Coppergate excavation on which the Viking Centre was built; new state-of-the-art animatronics and the reconstruction of a new Viking-age house and backyard.
In conjunction with the reopening, the 25th JORVIK Viking Centre Annual Viking Festival (13 – 21 February) offers a bumper programme of events in York, in celebration of its 25th anniversary. Visitors can join in the action as hundreds of Vikings from all over the world descend on the city for the nine day programme which will include Vikings fighting in ferocious battle; a spectacular celebratory fireworks display; a newly commissioned theatre piece from one of the north’s most admired theatre groups and an atmospheric candlelit evening of poetry and music performed for the Viking King.

A new People’s History Museum in Manchester is planned to re-open in early 2010 after a ВЈ12.5 million re-development project. The redevelopment brings together the main gallery site and the collections storage and archive building under one roof – a refurbished Pump House with a spectacular new extension.
