Discover the Arts, the longest running and largest arts campaign in the City, has launched the fourth-year of its campaign. Discover the Arts is held in conjunction with the City’s annual Los Angeles Arts Month celebration. Created in partnership with Wells Fargo and approximately 50 cultural institutions as well as media and community partners, the campaign; which runs now through April 30, 2012, offers myriad of cultural attractions to locals and tourists alike with up to 50 percent off admissions, gift items, and more.

“Los Angeles is where the world creates and innovates,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “I am thrilled to join LA INC. and all the participating institutions in celebrating LA’s contribution to the visual and performing arts. The City’s unparalleled diversity and rich range of cultural institutions offer a dynamic arts scene.”

The home to nearly 3,000 professional arts organizations and institutions, Los Angeles is a world-class arts capital, ranking second in the nation in volume for overseas cultural and heritage visitors according to the US Department of Commerce. Fully one-half of Los Angeles’ 26.9 million annual visitors get their information of why to come to LA, when to visit and what to see and do when they’re here from friends and family who live here.

“In partnership with Wells Fargo, our three-month Discover the Arts program is a great way to inform and extend the influence of arts-goers throughout the region to drive additional visitation to LA,” said Mark Liberman, president and CEO of LA INC. “This initiative defines the arts broadly to include museums that present everything from art and automobiles, to gardens and even dinosaurs. Once people experience a play at a small neighborhood theater, a grand opera or symphony performance, or an engaging art exhibition, we’re confident they’ll return throughout the year and bring their family and friends.”

From art aficionados to families, Discover the Arts encourages everyone to explore their favorite arts institutions while discovering museums and other arts institutions they have never visited before.

“This is Wells Fargo’s fourth year partnering with LA INC. to present the Discover the Arts campaign to make the arts accessible to all,” said John Sotoodeh, Wells Fargo L.A. Metro/Orange County Regional Banking president. “The goal of Discover the Arts is to create greater awareness, appreciation and demand for arts and culture experiences among LA residents and visitors alike.”

Institutions participating in Discover the Arts include the following: Annenberg Space for Photography, the Aquarium of the Pacific, Autry National Center, California African American Museum, California Science Center, Center Theater Group, Chinese American Museum, Colburn School, Craft and Folk Art Museum, Fowler Museum at UCLA, Geffen Playhouse, Getty Center, Getty Villa, The GRAMMY Museum® at L.A. LIVE, Hammer Museum, Heritage Square Museum, Hollywood Museum, Huntington Library, Art Collections & Botanical Gardens, IRIS, a Journey Through the World of Cinema™ from Cirque du Soleil®, Japanese American National Museum, LA Stage Alliance, LACMA, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Conservancy, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Los Angeles Philharmonic, LA Opera, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Museum of Latin American Art, Los Angeles Museum of The Holocaust, Museum of Tolerance, Music Center, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, NOHO Arts District, Pacific Asia Museum, Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, The Paley Center for Media, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Petersen Automotive Museum, REDCAT, Santa Monica Museum of Art, Skirball Cultural Center, The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Library, USC Fisher Museum of Art, Valley Performing Arts Center, Wells Fargo History Museum, Wende Museum & Archive of the Cold War, Zimmer Children’s Museum.Beginning in February, when visitors book an overnight stay on hotels.com at participating Los Angeles hotels, they will receive a Discover the Arts discount voucher that will give them up to 50% off admission, gift store items and more at 50 cultural attractions across Los Angeles.

Next, head to City Park and walk the Mile High Loop, a trail that’s – you guessed it – one mile high. Finally, take a free “Behind The Seams” tour of Coors Field, the downtown home of the Colorado Rockies.

SONOMA COUNTY, CALIF. – While there’s always something new to experience in Sonoma County, 2012 promises to delight visitors with the much-anticipated opening of a world-class music venue, the return of a premier cycling event, the diamond jubilee of a regional icon, and a year’s worth of bicentennial celebrations.

Green Music Center

Music will ring out on Sept. 29, 2012, as Sonoma State University’s Donald and Maureen Green Music Center marks its grand opening. The inaugural season boasts an incredible schedule, including orchestra in residence, the Santa Rosa Symphony.

The Green Music Center’s acoustical perfection has already attracted renowned musicians, such as Yo-Yo Ma, to experience its architectural and acoustical wonders. The main auditorium, the 1,400-seat, European-style Weill Concert Hall, is acoustically designed to rival great venues such as Boston Symphony Hall and Vienna Musikvereinssaal.

The hall’s acoustical attributes rivals that of Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood; but it surpasses Tanglewood in terms of flexibility and comfort. The three floors of Weill Hall – the Orchestra level on the floor, the Choral Circle in the middle, and the Balcony on top – boast handcrafted, European steamed beech maple seats that are designed to be acoustically neutral whether occupied or not. By opening a modular rear wall of the hall, the concert experience can include up to 3,000 concert goers in outdoor seating

New American Viticulture Areas

It spans 4,750 acres and contains 230 acres of vineyards, with another 150 acres of vineyards under development. The new AVA overlaps with the Alexander Valley and Northern Sonoma viticultural areas, but its mountainous soils and steep terrain makes it distinct.

Wine Tasting with the Count

California’s oldest premium winery offers a chance to experience this historic property while mingling with the “father of California viticulture”, Count Agoston Haraszthy. Actually, the role of the colorful count is played by local history actor, George Webber.

The Hungarian-born Haraszthy founded Buena Vista winery in 1857, and today it’s a California historic landmark just outside the town of Sonoma.

Tours with the count are available by appointment, Friday through Sunday, and include a full tasting of Buena Vista’s wines and a tour around the gorgeous gardens and stone winery buildings. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and costs $20 per person.

Simi Launches Jug Wine

Simi’s new jug wine, named Maiale Cieco, or Blind Pig, is a blend of 66 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Zinfandel and 14 percent Pinot Noir, all grown in Alexander Valley.

During Prohibition, Simi was one of the few Sonoma wineries to secretly stay open, charging visitors an admittance fee to see an advertised attraction, like a blind pig (maiale cieco in Italian). Once inside, visitors filled growlers (a ceramic beer jug) to take home.

Today, wine lovers can purchase a two-liter jug for $46, with subsequent refills for $36. (A green way to drink wine!) Pick up a punch card and receive half-off your seventh refill.

Sweet T’s Restaurant + Bar

Southern food migrates north to Sonoma County at Sweet T’s Restaurant and bar. Owners Dennis and Ann Tussey have imported well-respected Memphis chef, Mac Edwards, to bring their vision of a southern- inspired, Lowcountry restaurant to Santa Rosa.

On the menu are classics such as shrimp and grits, fried chicken, and house-smoked barbecue, created with the quality local produce and meat of Sonoma County’s wine country.

Inside, the pressure cooker is the star of the show as fried chicken sizzles to crispy perfection. Outside, the focus is on a smoker that puffs away, filled with ribs, chicken and pork butt. Pair them with coleslaw, biscuits and a lot of napkins.

Sweet T’s is open for lunch and dinner every day except Tuesday.

The BBQ Spot

Southern-style barbecue is on the menu in this spot on Santa Rosa Avenue in Santa Rosa. Chef and owner Rob Fernandez was inspired by a road trip he made through the southern states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. He brought his inspiration home, and began cooking up barbecue at a local Farmer’s Market. In October he opened The BBQ Spot and diners have followed the trail of smoke rings since it opened.

The menu features brisket, pulled pork, chicken, and St. Louis-style ribs. Sides include baked beans, macaroni salad, coleslaw, French fries, and cornbread.

Those who are really hungry can take on the challenge of The Legend: a half rack of ribs, four pieces of chicken, a pound of brisket, a pound of pulled pork, a large order of fries, two sides and two pieces of cornbread. If you can eat it all in one sitting, it’s free. If not, the customer pays $38.75 and gets a to-go box!

The BBQ Spot is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Hole in the Wall

While this new restaurant may be a bit hidden, visitors will be rewarded for their search with dishes like short rib hash, biscuits and gravy, or the chef’s recipe for housemade gumbo. Located in the corner of a strip mall in Sebastopol, Chef Adam Beers opened the Hole in the Wall after working at The French Garden in Sebastopol, and The Village Bakery.

Los Angeles experienced the largest number of visitors and spending in the history of the city in 2011. A total of approximately 26.9 million people visited LA in 2011, an increase of 4.2 percent more overnight visitors than in 2010. Tourist spending rose as well with visitors accounting for $15.2 billion in expenditures – an 8 percent increase from the previous year.

“This year’s impressive growth in tourism is great news for our local businesses that rely on tourist spending to make their companies both successful and profitable,” said Mark Liberman, president and CEO of LA INC. The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The increase was experienced in all areas of our city as indicated by increased occupancy at hotels and attendance at restaurants, attractions and cultural institutions. This is significant for the LA economy as one out of ten jobs are related to tourism and the industry employs 364,000 persons.”

International visitors made one of the largest impacts on LA’s tourism with 5.9 million visitors to the City, a 7 percent increase over last year. International travelers also had a visible increase in spending— 12 percent more in 2011—totaling nearly $5.5 billion in revenue.

For the second time in a row, Australia is LA’s No. 1 overseas market. Recognizing the importance of the LA market, Australia now has more seat capacity for arriving flights than any overseas country.

LA is the leading U.S. gateway to Asia. Los Angeles benefitted from growth from Asia, specifically travelers from China, which increased nearly 25 percent. Three additional flights from China were added in 2011. In April, American Airlines began service from Shanghai to LAX; United Airlines started service on the same route in May; and in September, Air China added a second flight from LAX to Beijing. Japan also reported a strong rebound in 2011 with a 5.5 percent increase in visitors, despite the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

“LA is the gateway to the Pacific Rim and we are doing everything we can to strengthen our ties to the region,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “In 2006, Los Angeles became the first American city to open a tourism office in Beijing. In the five years after the office opened, the number of visitors from China to Los Angeles increased by 150 percent from 110,000 in 2006 to 273,000 in 2010. We are committed to increasing tourism to LA because it means more jobs for Angelenos.”

Visitors from Canada and Mexico increased by 13 percent and 4 percent respectively. In 2011, 675,000 Canadians visited LA, a record high in volume for Canadian visitors to LA. Since 2001, when 383,000 Canadians visited LA, Canadian visitation has increased by over 76 percent.

In addition to an increase in international visitors, domestic travelers increased by over 2 percent. These visitors spent more than $9.7- a five percent increase over last year.

With more than 320 days of sunshine each year, LA has a natural advantage. In 2011, visitors discovered new and compelling reasons to visit, including Cirque de Soleil®’s new show, IRIS: A Journey Through the World of Cinema™, in its new permanent home at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood and Natural History Museum’s Dinosaur Hall, which now rivals the world’s largest dinosaur halls. 2012 promises to be a blockbuster year for Los Angeles with major new attractions including Universal Studios Hollywood launch of “Transformers The Ride-3D” this May and the arrival NASA space shuttle Endeavor, which will retire at the California Science Center in 2012.

“As a leading worldwide tourist destination, Universal Studios Hollywood enjoyed significant growth in international visitation in 2011,” said Larry Kurzweil, President, Universal Studios Hollywood. “As we set the stage to launch ‘Transformers: The Ride-3D,’ the Park’s most technologically-advanced thrill ride ever built, we’re prepared to see our tourism numbers increase dramatically.”

Looking ahead, Los Angeles is poised for the next era. With the $1.5 billion project to provide greater capacity to the New Tom Bradley International Terminal well underway, LA is ready to further expand its international reach and continue its reign as the number one U.S. gateway for passengers from Asia.

LAX has close to 1,000 weekly nonstop flights to 58 international destinations on nearly 50 carriers and accounts for $10.7 billion annually in economic benefits to the Southern California region, according to airport officials.

2012 promises to be an exciting year for the travel business as Los Angeles will be the host city to International Pow Wow produced by the U.S. Travel Association in April. More than 5,000 exhibitors; tour operators and travel media from 70 countries will attend Pow Wow in Los Angeles. The event is expected to generate an estimated $350 million in the three years following Pow Wow due to the expected increase of international travel business.

LA INC. The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau is a private, nonprofit business association whose primary mission is to market and promote Los Angeles as the premier site for meetings, conventions and leisure travel. Though not part of city government, LA INC. is recognized as the city’s official tourism marketing organization.

SACRAMENTO – In a first for the U.S., last week President Barack Obama announced a national strategy on travel and tourism to boost travel in the United States. The U.S. travel industry is a cornerstone of the U.S. economy, representing 1.8 trillion in economic output and supporting 14 million American jobs.

While an increase in international business will benefit major cities, rural areas also recognize the impact. Mary Ann McAlea, President for the Gold Country Visitors Association, commented on the work of Visit California and the U.S. Travel Association to gain interest in these efforts. “The Gold Country has seen a significant increase in interest from international visitors over the last five years. We offer an authentic California experience featuring incredible outdoor recreation, charming small towns and boutique wineries, and a rich history as the location of the discovery of Gold and the California Gold Rush of 1849. International visitors love the value we offer as they discover this “new” destination to them. Many of our partners throughout this diversified region are focusing on tourism as a critical economic driver. Removing the barriers for inbound travelers will be an important step to support our outreach and give visitors a reason to rediscover gold here.” The Gold Country region was just listed in Lonely Planet’s Top Ten U.S. Destinations to see in 2012.

According to a White House statement, today’s announcement calls for a national strategy to make the United States the world’s top travel and tourism destination, as part of a comprehensive effort to spur job creation. The number of travelers from emerging economies with growing middle classes – such as China, Brazil, and India – is projected to grow by 135%, 274% and 50% respectively by 2016 when compared to 2010.

President Obama will also sign an Executive Order and charge several government agencies to take part in efforts and new initiatives to significantly increase travel. Some of the initiatives include: a new pilot program and rule change for visa processing in China and Brazil, a final rule to expand and make the Global Entry program permanent, appoint new members to the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, and the Nomination of Taiwan to the Visa Waiver Program.

“This is the first time our country has had a national strategy and set goals for the amount of visitors we want to welcome to our country. The timing of the President’s announcement could not be better. Travel is an essential industry for our nation and a bipartisan issue that can unite our country and rally us forward. Not only will this increase traffic to America’s wonderful destinations and attractions, but nearly half of the travelers will come to attend conferences and tradeshows,” said Roger Dow, president and CEO for the U.S. Travel Association. “The president has put forward his vision and the travel industry is ready to heed the call. U.S. Travel looks forward to working with the Administration to improve America’s economy and create more American jobs.”

The Gold Country Visitors Association, one of the rural regions designated by Visit California, has joined the U.S. Travel Association to increase travel to and within California and to better communicate the assets of one of the most historic areas in the Western United States. Gold Country Visitors Association will showcase the region at Los Angeles Pow Wow April 21-26, the most important travel industry show on U.S. soil. For more information about California’s Gold Country, visit www.calagold.org or call 916-985-2698.
