Switzerland currently lies under a thick blanket of fluffy snow, the sun sparkles from a crystal blue sky and people can’t wait to hit the ski slopes! The same rings true for Bachelor Ben Flanjik who had to make difficult choices in the snow on the other side of the world!

Despite all the fun in the mountains, there is lots of cool stuff going on in Swiss cities. Lucerne hosts the Fumetto Comic Festival which is attracting more people every year and has evolved from insider tip to one of the most renowned European festivala of its kind. Or maybe you prefer sports? This year’s World Men Curling Championship in Basel will guarantee fun and excitement not only for lovers of this sport!

Strokes on Paper

Fumetto – International Comix-Festival Lucerne has since its introduction in 1992 developed into the top location for artistically ambitious comics in Europe. Every year it presents a well-balanced program of exhibitions by national and international artists committed to narrative art for 9 days in and around the city of Lucerne. From March 24 – April 1.

Fumetto Comic Festival

Rocks on Ice

There are few sport disciplines who require both muscle work and brain power to function in perfect unison. Cheer for the USA team or for the Swiss medal contenders at this year’s World Men’s Curling Championship, which is held in the beautiful city of Basel from March 31 – April 8. Will Team Canada be able to win the golden trophy for the 3rd time in a row?

Bunnies on Snow

Sparks fly as “The Bachelor” Ben Flanjik is sailing his ship through a sea of very pretty (and very ambitious) females. In the last show, you didn’t have to be a Swiss aficionado to recognize majestic Matterhorn… We can’t wait until Ben takes his final three ladies to Switzerland, so stay tuned and watch ABC’s “The Bachelor” on Monday nights (Recaps on following Sundays).

The network of the Matterhorn cross-country skiing trails has been extended this season with the re-opening of the trails used for the Junior World Championship in 1989. The new section is technically demanding, and perfectly rounds off the range of trails on offer.

The new trail section is located on the eastern side of the valley, in the so-called Tales “Täschgufer”, alongside the former Mattertal ski jump. The new section has a length of 2 kilometres, and overcomes a height difference of 60 metres over a distance of 800 metres. The downhill run, which is the most technically demanding part of the trail and is fitted with safety nets, is laid out in the style of an Alpine road with hairpin bends.

Challenging training run

Together with the already existing and hilly cross-country skiing trail in Randa, the new Täschgufer cross-country skiing trail offers a challenging training run for ambitious cross-country skiers. The route profile of the above-mentioned cross-country skiing trail on the eastern side of the cantonal road now comprises a height difference of 160 m over a distance of 6 km. The trail can be entered in the village of Randa, by the camping site Randa or by the bridge over the cantonal road from Täsch to Randa. Reinhard Zeiter, certified cross-country trainer has the following to say: “The cross-country skiing trail presents a challenge for the technical capabilities and condition of any experienced cross-country skier, and is the ideal training run for them”.

The simpler section of country skiing trail on the western side of the cantonal road, which is rather flat, has landscapes that are just as beautiful, with some parts running over the golf course. The complete network of cross-country skiing trails in Täsch and Randa, now comprising almost 15 kilometres, offer beginners and professional cross-country skiers ideal conditions to enjoy their passion. Zermatt Tourism supports the Matterhorn cross-country skiing trail with CHF 40,000 a year. Neither the regular preparation nor the expansion of the cross-country skiing trail network would be possible without this financial support.

Trails extension Täsch

The use of the cross-country skiing trail is subject to a fee

Please only use the cross-country skiing trail in Täschgufer in the indicated direction. Due to the potential danger of accidents, hikers and pedestrians are urged not to walk on the cross-country skiing trail, in particular the downhill section.

The use of the cross-country skiing trail is subject to a fee. Cross-country skiing trail passes can be bought from the tourist offices in Täsch and Zermatt, the Service centre (Dienstleistungszentrum) in Randa, Alpini Sport in Täsch, the counter of the Matterhorn Gotthardbahn in Zermatt und Täsch and the Hotel Monte-Rosa in Täsch. Day ticket CHF 5, Week ticket CHF 30, Season ticket for the cross-country skiing trail Täsch CHF 70. Season ticket for cross-country skiing trails in Switzerland, incl. Täsch CHF 120.

January 5, 2012 Lausanne, Switzerland — While many U.S ski resorts struggle with an unusually dry and warm winter, the Lake Geneva Region of Switzerland is covered in a deep blanket of fresh snow – with more on the way. The ski season has just begun, but Lake Geneva Region resorts are reporting impressive snowfall totals. The resort at Les Diablerets has already received eight feet of snow to date, while Leysin has six feet, Villars-Gryon has more than five feet and Chateaux d’Oex has nearly four feet of snow. The good news is that the forecast is calling for even more snow in the Lake Geneva Region in the next few days.

The Lake Geneva Region, also known as the Canton of Vaud, lies in Southwestern Switzerland, along the northern shore of Lac Leman, a.k.a. Lake Geneva. For skiers visiting the region, the proximity of culturally rich cities along the lake, such as Lausanne, Montreux and Vevey — with their museums, restaurants and shops — make it unlike any other ski area in the world.

Ski vacations in the Lake Geneva Region have long been a terrific value, and even more so with cost of U.S. ski passes now topping $100 a day at major US resorts. The Free for Kids offer gives children age 9 and under a complimentary ski pass and free accommodations in their parents’ room. The offer is good for 37 properties in Château-d’Oex, Rougemont, Leysin-Les Mosses, Les Diablerets and Villars-Gryon.

You don’t need to be a hero to ski the pistes of the Lake Geneva Region: the mountains in this region are technically the Pre-Alps, the slopes that lead up to the higher Alps with runs that are kinder and gentler and ideal for families. Cross-country fans can take advantage of the Jura area, which offers some of the most extensive cross country skiing in all of Europe. There’s the 93 mile long Alpine Circuit and the 275 mile Jurassic area, ideal for both classic and skate skiing. For those who are new to the sport, the First Time Offer is for a free one day rental of either cross country skis or snowshoes while staying in a participating area hotel.

With stunning mountain views across Lake Geneva, cozy chalets serving authentic cheese fondue, and fast scenic rail connections from Geneva Cointrin Airport to the mountain villages in less than two hours, the Lake Geneva Region offers the ultimate Swiss ski vacation. Thanks to more than 500 miles of marked ski runs, the resorts of the Lake Geneva Region can offer slopes for skiers and boarders of all abilities.

Snow lovers who appreciate unusual locations with a cool ambiance will be delighted: the Igloo Village on Rotenboden is back from the beginning of December 2011 after a one-year break. There’s also a new attraction: the Hot Igloo. It can’t get more romantic than this!

Who has never dreamed of spending a night in an igloo with only the sky above them? Manager Reto Gili and his team have made the dream come true. From the Hot Igloo, a sort of round tent with large igloo entrance, wooden floor, fire and proper bed, guests can gaze through a 2.5 metre-diameter plexiglass window to Zermatt’s starry night sky. And all while enjoying the cosy warmth of a wood-burning stove. The hotel landscape of the Matterhorn village has gained yet another attraction.

For skiers, winter walkers and sledging guests

A piste-side stop at the Igloo Village on Rotenboden is much more than a chance to take a break. From the beginning of December 2011, up to 100 guests will be able to enjoy snacks, drinks and plenty of great live music at the Igloo Icebar.

The restaurant can welcome up to 60 guests in the evening. The option of building an igloo under expert instruction, as well as cosy lounges with reclining chairs, Matterhorn views included, make the location ideal for parties and company events. To note in your events calendar from 10 January 2012: on Tuesdays a fondue feast with an igloo visit and on Thursdays a late-night fondue with live music.

Comfort and adventure: sleeping in the Igloo Village

The Igloo Village can accommodate up to 40 overnight guests. Anyone deciding on a last-minute booking can do so directly at reception. During the winter season up to 2000 overnight guests stay in what must surely be Zermatt’s coolest hotel, although only the environment is cool: furs to sit on and warm blankets to sleep under ensure that no one freezes. The philosophy here centres on comfort and adventure – and that near to nature.

Igloo Village

Jacuzzi im Iglu-Dorf

And guests have no need to do without wellness! The Igloo Village has a specially created zone with two Jacuzzis set directly in the snow-covered landscape with views of the best side of the Matterhorn, something usually seen only from Rothorn or Sunnegga.

The offer in detail

Igloo Suite for 2 persons with whirlpool and Matterhorn view

Romantic Igloos for 2 persons with various facilities

Standard Igloo with rooms to sleep 6 persons

Family Igloo for families up to 6 persons

Hot Igloo with view of star-studded sky, for 2 persons

The hotel opens on 25 December 2011

Snowbar & Igloo restaurant, both opening as soon as the pistes are ready

The new Aviolino restaurant is on hand to provide sustenance. During the cold periods, the cosy atmosphere offers a pleasant place to dine, while ceiling-height windows enable guests to observe flight operations while they eat. In the summer, visitors can also enjoy service on the piazza.

Opening hours and prices

The popular family excursion destination and the Aviolino restaurant are open during the summer daily from 08:00.-.21:00 and during the winter from 09:00.-.18:00. On the observation deck, children aged under 10 can play for free. Children aged 10.-.16 pay CHF 2, adults aged 16 and over can use the facilities for CHF 5.

Facts and figures

Around 40 different companies and 1,000 people were involved in the construction of the entire Dock B and observation deck. The space, covering 7,000 square metres, comprises four different categories of offerings for visitors. There is a restaurant that occupies 250 square metres, a children’s play area, a number of seating areas and information for both adults and children. The central idea “The fascination of flying” is continued through the whole offering and highlights both the emotional pleasure of flying as well as the technical fascination with flight operations.

Schweiz Aktuell live broadcast on 26 October 2011

For everyone who can’t wait until the official opening of the observation deck on 1 December 2011: Schweiz Aktuell is dedicating a live programme to the new observation deck B. It will be broadcast tomorrow evening at 19:00 on SF1 – worth tuning in to.

There’s always something happening in Ticino – and this winter is no exception! With some of these ideas and suggestions, you’re sure to be inspired to come and visit Switzerland’s southernmost canton.

Pirouettes on the Piazza.

Locarno | 01/12/2011 – 08/01/2012

Also during the winter Locarno’s Piazza Grande plays a leading role. During the cold months the picturesque square which during the summer hosts the inter-national film festival and the music series Moon and Stars turns into a romantic ice rink. An indispensable part of Locarno on Ice is the concerts which are organized by Jazz Ascona. Jazz artists with gloves? An unusual idea… but the atmosphere is great – just like during the summer.

Ticino

Max Frisch was one of many intellectuals who chose Ticino as a refuge. He was particularly enamoured of winter on the southern side of the Alps. In his diary he wrote: “The water from melting snow runs over granite that takes on a violet-black hue when wet; in between, the wilted ferns, birch trunks, snow on the peaks, and beyond, the Mediterranean. When out walking in the woods at this time of year one encounters no one, just a few goats here and there; the streams are frozen over, but the sun is still warm. There is no lovelier place in the world right now.”

Where the mouth starts watering.

Lugano | 08/12 – 11/12/2011

Più Gusto – “More Taste”, the name of an event which lives up to its promises as it is considered among the most important food fairs in Switzerland. This year it celebrates its fifth edition. On more than 12,000 square metres around 300 producers from all over the world present their delicacies in Lugano. The event’s rich program also comprehends taste studios and obviously tasting sessions. Buon appetito!

The Christmas story brought to life.

Vira Gambarogno | 11/12/2011 – 06/01/2012

During the festive season, nativity scenes help to transform numerous towns and villages throughout Ticino. Artists and private individuals stage the Christmas story in streets and village squares, often in highly original and creative ways. The best-known example is in the village of Vira Gambarogno on Lake Maggiore, where over thirty nativity scenescreate a very special Christmas atmosphere.

Tracks in the snow.

Cardada

The funicular railway designed by the famous architect Mario Botta whisks passengers up to Cardada in just five minutes. During the wintertime it is almost impossible to find another location in Switzerland able to offer as much sunshine as the mountain which overlooks Locarno from its height of 1,340 metres above sea level. Cardada also offers unforgettable night-time experiences: snowshoe walking tours in the moonlight! And for the more adventurous, there are even night-time walks on the Cima della Trosa.

Aromatic mulled wine by candlelight.

Lugano | 01/12 – 24/12/2011

Let there be light! The lights on the big Christmas tree in Piazza Riforma in Lugano are switched on at 5:30 p.m. on 1 December. This also marks the opening of the ice rink and the Christmas market, bringing life and colour to the town. Until 8:00 p.m. every evening, over 150 stalls offer a wide range of culinary delights, as well as culture, wellbeing, art, crafts and antiques. The picture is completed by a series of jazz concerts entitled “Christmas in Jazz”.

A new jewel on the Lake Maggiore.

Minusio | 06/12/2011

In the beginning of December the opening of the boutique hotel Giardino Lago in Minusio will take place. The hotel which belongs to the Giardino Group is furnished with cloths form Designers Guild, oak parquet and stylistic glass elements which give the modern ambience a charming touch of tradition. The culinary highlight in the restaurant Lago is the U.S: Black Angus Beef, which is prepared at 800°C in a high-powered oven. It is served in a unique setting with a breath-taking view on the Lake Maggiore.

Locarno’s homage to Filippo Franzoni.

Locarno | 10/09/2011 – 29/01/2012

For the 100th anniversary of his death Locarno dedicates an exhibition to the artist Filippo Franzoni (1857-1911). The theatre of Locarno, where Franzoni worked as set designer and cellist will be the heart of the exposition. From 1903 to 1906 the artist lived on the Monte Verità in Ascona where he met a community of naturists and came in contact with theosophism. On the 17th of March 1911 Franzoni died in the psychiatric clinique of Mendrisio.

In the realm of King Rabadan.

Bellinzona | 16/02 – 21/02/2012

Bellinzona is a carnival hot spot. During Rabadan (which literally means “noise”), more than 150,000 people take to the streets and marquees each year to celebrate in style. Dante Pesciallo has been the duly elected carnival king for the last few years, with the mayor of the city handing over the keys to him on Fat Thursday. Over the next five days, the carnival revellers take over the capital of Ticino. Rabadan, which is being celebrated for the 149th time this year, reaches its climax in the Big Procession held on the Sunday.

Lugano’s new landmark.

Gabbani’s delicatessen, tucked away in the narrow streets of Lugano’s old town, is one of Ticino’s most photographed sights. The name Gabbani has been a byword for freshness and quality since 1937. Over the last few years, the company has gradually updated its retail strategy, so that it is now a wine shop, cheese shop, greengrocer’s, bakery, restaurant and bar. Recently, it has expanded its business even further by opening a designer hotel with a romantic, glass-domed inner courtyard. There’s no doubt about it, Lugano has acquired another landmark.

Leonardo’s erotic masterpiece.

Lugano | 16/10/2011 – 08/01/2012

Tesori a Lugano (“Treasures in Lugano”) is the title of a major exhibition of artistic masterpieces being held in Lugano. It includes the drawing Angel in the Flesh by the universal genius Leonardo da Vinci, which, due to its erotic nature, is widely regarded as one of the master’s most provocative works. This is the first time the work has been exhibited in Switzerland.

The curious world of Elisar von Kupffer.

Minusio | 17/09 – 11/12/2011 and 30/03 – 29/04/2012

The Elisarion Museum in Minusio is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a special exhibition. Based on hitherto unpublished documents, the exhibition tells the story of the Sanctuarium Artis Elisarion, which was conceived as a Gesamtkunstwerk or total artwork. The Estonian painter and philosopher Elisar von Kupffer (1872–1942) oversaw its construction in 1927 as a temple to the dualistic doctrine of Klarismus (“Clarity”). In it he installed many of his artworks, including his masterpiece, the panoramic painting entitled Die Klarwelt der Seligen (“The Clear World of the Blessed”).

Swissminiatur now open in winter.

Melide

Snow-covered peaks, traditional buildings and villages, railways and steamboats… everything that comes to mind when one thinks of Switzerland can be found at Swissminiatur in Melide. The amusement park, which enjoys a sunny lakeside location, covers some 14,000m2 and contains more than one hundred and twenty 1:25 scale models of well-known Swiss sights. Here the weather is pleasantly mild all year round – as visitors can now discover for themselves because the miniature Switzerland is opening in winter for the first time ever this year.

Filming of a dark chapter.

Verzasca Valley

Many Ticino mountain farmers were once driven by poverty to sell their children as chimney sweeps to northern Italy. Lisa Tetzner (1894–1963) created a literary monument to these children sold into service with her children’s book The Black Brothers. Now the story of little Giorgio from Sonogno in the Verzasca Valley will be featured on the big screen. While the parts set in Milan in 1838 are being shot in a Cologne film studio, the Swiss scenes are being filmed on location in Ticino. Moritz Bleibtreu is playing the lead in this feature film directed by Urs Egger.

Where tomorrow’s stars are born.

Airolo

Doris De Agostini, Michela Figini, Lara Gut: Ticino has produced a long list of skiing stars, with most of them launching their brilliant careers on the Leventina pistes. Ticino’s most extensive skiing area is to be found at Airolo. The station at the foot of the funicular railway to Pesciüm is located right next to the motorway exit, meaning that it is also easily accessible to visitors from the north. Thanks to its north-facing slopes on the Gotthard Massif, Airolo-Pesciüm enjoys optimum skiing conditions almost all the time.

Get an adrenalin rush.

Locarno

Locarno’s new lido on Lake Maggiore is more than just an alternative in the event of bad weather. With its thermal baths, swimming pools, water slides and play pools, it is also Ticino’s best-equipped water park. Those looking for an adrenalin rush just have to try out the rapid descents and tight curves offered by its four water slides, which include Switzerland’s first-ever looping slide. Those who prefer a more serene, relaxing experience will find that the wellness zone suits them down to the ground, whatever the weather!

Better value than ever before!

FoxTown

At the FoxTown outlet centre in Mendrisio, purchases can be made in euros. This means bargain-hunting is now more attractive than ever, despite the strong Swiss franc! In fact, 160 factory outlets covering fashion, sports, textiles and leather goods, attract customers with discounts of between 30 and 70 per cent. The US magazine Forbes ranked FoxTown number two in its list of the “World’s Best Outlet Stores”.

(SAN FRANCISCO/TORONTO) – SEPTEMBER 27, 2011 – Lucerne, the famous resort town at the shores of Lake Lucerne in the heart of Switzerland, right at the foot of Mount Pilatus and the Alps, has won the bid to serve as Destination Host to the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s (ATTA) ninth annual Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS).

Expected to draw 600 adventure tourism professionals from more than 50 nations, the ATWS will be held October 8-11, 2012 at the KKL Luzern (Culture and Congress Centre), built by renowned architect Jean Nouvel.

Announced by the ATTA and Switzerland Tourism officials today during events in San Francisco and Toronto, ATTA reported its decision came after extensive review of several sites throughout the world. In addition to meeting all prerequisites outlined in the bidding process, Lucerne won the 2012 ATWS bid primarily for its long-standing partnership with the ATTA and readiness to share its extensive experience in modern adventure travel and tourism, which many say, originated 150 years ago in Switzerland.

It will be one of the most environmentally friendly Summits yet, thanks to Switzerland’s strong record as a sustainable travel destination, where most travel will take place by public transportation. This unique network of trains, buses, boats and city transit systems helped Switzerland again be number one as the top adventure tourism destination among developed countries in the 2011 Adventure Tourism Development Index, a study published by The George Washington University, the ATTA and Vital Wave Consulting. In addition to its commitment to sustainability, Switzerland earned this rank for its support of entrepreneurs and its strong adventure image.

Partners for the 2012 ATWS are Switzerland Tourism and Lucerne Tourism. “The Summit ties in directly with Switzerland’s overall tourism strategy because year-round adventure travel is a unique and authentic way to enjoy Switzerland’s diversity, both naturally and culturally”, said Alex Herrmann, Director Americas of Switzerland Tourism. “Adventure travel in Switzerland is something for everybody, and the Pre-Summit adventures will allow delegates to experience this first-hand. And Switzerland is a small country, so a short scenic train ride can get a visitor from an adrenaline-pumping mountain bike ride in Western Switzerland’s wine country, a UNESCO World Heritage, to a leisurely hike on the Swiss Trails network followed by a spa visit in an upscale resort in the Alps.”

“Lucerne is centrally located, not just in Switzerland but in Europe, and its proximity to Zurich International Airport, just one hour by direct train, will make next year’s Summit easily accessible for the adventure travel community in Europe and across the world”, said Marcel Perren, Director of Lucerne Tourism.

“For several years, the ATTA has partnered with Switzerland Tourism to see adventure travel in the Alpine region evolve further to include the full depth and breadth of Switzerland’s cultural and natural assets,” said ATTA President Shannon Stowell. “Switzerland and the ATTA are a natural fit, as Switzerland is also home to some of the most popular adventure destinations in the world, such as Interlaken and Zermatt.”

Entering its eight year, the ATTA’s Summit conferences engage, enlighten, inspire, and energize the leaders of the adventure travel community with networking, business and professional development programs, educational seminars and emerging adventure destination product review opportunities.

With its ATWS events, the ATTA and its Summit delegates, primarily tour operators, destination marketing organizations, tourism boards, media, agents, adventure lodges, and service organizations (e.g., transportation, technology, marketing), influence the manner in which adventure travel is introduced, executed and sustained in any given destination worldwide. These adventure travel organizations collaborate to encourage the industry to adopt sustainability and best practices that give back to the people and places impacted by adventure travel.

Registration is now open at www.adventuretravel.biz/atws2012

About ATTA: Established in 1990, the Seattle-based ATTA (www.adventuretravel.biz ) is a global membership organization dedicated to unifying, networking, professionalizing, promoting and responsibly growing the adventure travel market. ATTA members include tour operators, destination marketing organizations, tourism boards, specialty travel agents, guides, accommodations, media and service providers. Host of the annual Adventure Travel World Summit executive trade conferences (www.adventuretravelworldsummit.com ), the ATTA also makes possible www.Adventure.Travel, the traveler’s hub of physical, cultural and nature-based adventure travel and guide to trusted tour operators from around the globe.

About ATDI: The Adventure Tourism Development Index (ATDI), now in its third year, offers a ranking of countries around the world based on principles of sustainable adventure tourism and is calculated through a combination of expert survey data and quantitative data gathered from international indices. (www.adventureindex.travel/downloads.htm).

About Switzerland Tourism/Lucerne Tourism: Switzerland Tourism is the official national marketing organization of Switzerland (www.myswitzerland.com). Lucerne Tourism is the destination marketing organization for the city of Lucerne and the Lake Lucerne Region

Zermatt Matterhorn was today presented with the highest award as a touristic sustainable holiday destination by the VCS (Swiss Motor Club). In the related survey entitled “mobile & ecological”, Zermatt was honoured with first place.

“For car-free Zermatt, this award is confirmation that our decades of effort and commitment for a sustainable destination are being rewarded,” says Resort Director Daniel Luggen.

Fourteen destinations were evaluated: Adelboden, Arosa, Crans-Montana, Davos Platz, Engelberg, Grindelwald, Lenzerheide, Leukerbad, Saas-Fee, Scuol, St. Moritz, Verbier, Wengen and Zermatt. In second place was Saas-Fee, also car-free, followed by St. Moritz. This new “mobile & ecological” rating by the VCS is intended to assist consumers with decision making on winter holidays. The survey was supported amongst others by the STV (Swiss Tourism Association) and the Federal Office for Spatial Development ARE.

Zermatt takes 1st place

Among the criteria evaluated were travelling time to the destination, signage, local buses, frequency of public transport and luggage transport possibilities. Daniel Luggen however also sees the award for Zermatt as an on-going assignment: “The survey also shows us where there is potential for improvement. We have already reacted to the first points.” Negative points were given for the fact that the zermatt.ch website first listed “By car” and not “By public transport” under “Arriving in Zermatt.” This has already been amended.

Daniel Luggen is aware that tourism is effectively a balancing act between comfort, growth and improvement of offers on the one hand and sustainability on the other: “We will continue to be committed to sustainability. We’re staying on the ball!”
