Leading Spas of Canada (LSC) has introduced the Quality Assurance Program to provide consistent standards for safety, hygiene and business standards for the Canadian spa industry, offering reassurance and uncompromising quality for spa guests. This extensive program was developed by Leading Spas of Canada’s Standards & Practices Committee, and is based on the rigorous standards supported by all member spas. The Quality Assurance program includes on-site assessments by third-party evaluators to ensure all the standards are met or exceeded.

Twenty spas have already successfully completed the program and received their Quality Assurance Approved designation, and an additional fourteen spas are currently in the process of obtaining their Quality Assurance Approved (QAA) status.

Upon completing the assessment and meeting or exceeding all standards, the spas receive a certificate and seal of approval for display on-site and in marketing materials, recognizing their Quality Assurance status. The QAA icon serves as a visual indicator for spa guests and staff of the spa’s commitment to safety and hygiene standards.

While several ‘ratings’ programs exist which grade spas based on the amenities available, the Quality Assurance verification process culminates in a strict pass or fail. Spa offerings and amenities vary dramatically and at the heart of this program is not to measure the value of amenities or size of the spa, but the desire to ensure all spas meet essential safety, hygiene and operational standards, offering confidence and comfort to the spa management, employees and the guest.

Diane Sparrow is President of Leading Spas of Canada and has chaired the association’s Standards & Practices committee over the past few years as they designed and implemented the Quality Assurance Program. And as the owner of Riverstone Spa at The Forks in Winnipeg, Sparrow is thrilled to see this innovative program come to fruition. “The Quality Assurance program will increase public confidence which is a great marketing tool and a very significant factor to ensuring the continued success of any spa operation. And as an association, Leading Spas of Canada is positioning themselves as world leaders in standards development within the industry. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished”. All Canadian spas committed to the standards and best practices required by Leading Spas of Canada are encouraged to participate in the program.

Leading Spas of Canada is pleased to announce 16 Canadian spas have received “Quality Assurance Approved” status, a national designation recognizing consistent safety and hygiene standards in the spa industry, offering reassurance and uncompromising quality for spa guests.

Congratulations to:

•	100 Fountain Spa at the Pillar and Post, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON
•	Ambiance Day Spa, Saint John, NB
•	Brentwood Bay Lodge & Spa, Victoria, BC
•	Haven Spa at Sidney Pier Hotel & Spa, Sidney, BC
•	Holtz Spa, Ottawa, ON
•	Riverstone Spa, Inn at the Forks, Winnipeg, MB
•	Rosewater Spa of Oakville, Oakville, ON
•	Santé Spa Calgary, Calgary, AB
•	Santé Spa Victoria, Bear Mountain Resort, Victoria, BC
•	Secret Garden Spa at The Prince of Wales, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON
•	Shear Elegance Salon & Spa, London, ON
•	Sun Tree Spa, Temple Gardens Mineral Spa Resort, Moose Jaw, SK
•	Ten Spa, Winnipeg, MB
•	The Grotto Spa at Tigh-na-Mara Resort, Parksville, BC
•	The Spa Ritual, Calgary, AB
•	Vida Wellness Spa, Wall Centre, Vancouver, BC

Following several years spent carefully developing the criteria, Leading Spas of Canada introduced an extensive Quality Assurance program as a pilot project last year. “Safety and hygiene standards have been a key concern over the past few years, as the popularity of spa treatments has grown”, notes Diane Sparrow, Chair of the Standards & Practices Committee for Leading Spas of Canada (LSC). “We’re very proud of the program we have developed and thrilled with the level of standards the participating spas have exhibited. Congratulations to all of them for achieving this designation”.

To receive recognition as a “Quality Assurance Approved” spa, on-site assessments were conducted, examining each spa’s standards regarding sterilization of instruments, hygiene standards in treatment protocols, equipment and facility safety, cleanliness, proper safety and security procedures, staff certification and education, proper signage and customer service standards. To ensure proper standards for the staff, human resource processes were examined as well, in addition to the spas marketing materials being reviewed to confirm required information including cancellation and gratuity policies, rates and menu of services were clearly presented. The assessments were conducted by specially-trained third-party evaluators, to maintain the integrity of the program, and culminate in a strict pass or fail result. All of the criteria must be met or exceeded before the spa receives their Quality Assurance Approved (QAA) status.

The spas which successfully achieved QAA status during the pilot program were recently awarded a certificate for display and seal of approval to incorporate into their marketing materials, recognizing their Quality Assurance status, valid for the next two years before another assessment will be conducted.

“Spa offerings and amenities vary dramatically. This program is not designed to measure the value of amenities, such as steam room or sauna, nor to credit them for the size of their spa, and grade them on a scale. The spas are all examined by the same criteria and must meet all essential safety, hygiene and operational standards. Receiving QAA status identifies them as dedicated to safety, hygiene and operating practices, offering confidence and comfort to the spa management, employees and the guest”, advises Diane Sparrow.

Since 1998, Leading Spas of Canada (LSC) has served as Canada’s only national spa association, setting rigorous standards of safety, hygiene and service. For the past decade, these standards were supported through voluntary adherence by all member spas, which remains for all member spas. The new Quality Assurance program is a step beyond, incorporating the on-site assessments to physically verify all requirements are met or exceeded. To date, the Leading Spas of Canada initiative is the only national, comprehensive assessment program for spas in the world.

The Quality Assurance program is available to all member spas of Leading Spas of Canada in 2010. Look for this seal, identifying spas which have successfully achieved Quality Assurance Approved status:

Montreal, October, 2009 – Simhananda’s latest book shows us how to consciously activate our own Inner Light, which inevitably helps us connect with the Light of the Soul. The book’s format is quite simple: 308 original questions each one using the word LIGHT, yet the introspection they bring upon the reader is quite authentic, profound and mysteriously peaceful. The regular perusal of this book allows the beauty of our Spirit to shine forth in our everyday lives.

“These 308 Questions of Light are an invitation to invoke the Light of the Soul into our daily lives, thereby revealing the inner light that potentially resides within us all.”
-Simhananda

The tranquil, and intent reflection upon each poetic question awakens in the reader the dispassion, discrimination and meditative discipline needed for a life of conscious work and enlightened service to the all of humanity.

In these difficult times, Simhananda’s book allows for a glimpse into the true nature of the ephemeral material world, so that we may reorient ourselves more towards Spirit.

Olympian Carrier
Will you not be an Olympian Carrier of the Sacred Flame of Light
to all corners of everywhere at all times?
Deep Peace
Does your Heart full of Light and your Spirit full of Joy
make other hearts pause and skip a beat, and wonder why
they are left with a peculiar feeling of unaccounted Deep Peace?

Montreal, Quebec: Medisys Health Group (“Medisys”), Canada’s leader in preventive health services and the Spa Eastman Health Centre, recently honoured as one of America’s Healthiest Spas by Health Magazine, are pleased to announce the launch of an executive retreat program aimed at identifying personal health risk-factors and developing effective strategies to address their root causes.

Corporations are increasingly being faced with mounting healthcare costs as well as the cost of absenteeism and productivity loss which can be directly linked to the health and wellness of their workforce; as a result, employers are becoming increasingly proactive with regards to their employees’ health.

“Executives and professionals are faced with pressures, such as long work hours and high-stress environments that may promote behaviours with a negative impact on health. Poor nutrition habits and physical inactivity are just two examples”, states Dr. Sheldon Elman, CEO and Chairman of Medisys Health Group. “The Executive Retreat program runs over the course of 5 or 7 days and focuses primarily on introducing tools to reduce stress, increase physical fitness, optimize nutrition and increasing overall health.”

The process starts with a comprehensive health assessment at Medisys Health Group in order to get an accurate snapshot of the client’s current health status and to identify areas for improvement.
This one gives Turkish Delight a whole new meaning! Located on the tenth floor of the historic Hotel Fort Garry in downtown Winnipeg, Ten Spa’s hamam treatment is described as a modern re-interpretation of the Turkish Roman hot air bathing ritual. Right from your first sip of Moroccan mint tea combined with deliciously soft Turkish Delight that is served as a precursor to the treatment to get you in the mood if you aren’t already, indulging in a hamam is guaranteed to transport you to a romantic era in an exotic part of the world.

Although it has become fashionable for a hamam bath to be included on the menu at spas throughout North America, Ten Spa is the only one that has created rooms for clients to partake of the complete authentic experience as it was meant to be. The rooms are elaborate, and the detailing of both the architecture and the therapy is the result of much research that was done in Istanbul, London, Paris, Munich and New York when this feature was being designed for Ten Spa patrons.

Supplied with the requisite plush spa bathrobe and Italian sensi slippers, partakers of hamam also receive a large fringed cotton cloth called a pestemal that will be worn throughout the treatment, whether wet or dry. It’s important to set aside lots of time to enjoy the full hamam treatment, as well as relaxation time following it, as a great deal of body “detoxing” is accomplished and requires you to downshift your usual speed of life.

After gasping in admiration of the expansive and invitingly steamy main treatment area that comes replete with sensuous Middle Eastern music and a ceiling speckled with stars that hearken back to romantic Arabian nights, first up is a shower followed by a personal exfoliation with a selection of aromatic bath salts.

Water is everywhere! To drink, to shower, to have it poured over your body at intervals. It occurred to me that water is the missing component of many spa treatments, as it is used so liberally here. After the exfoliation, you lie on a heated marble slab and submit yourself to the skillful ministrations of your therapist, who can be male or female. As your body heats up, the salts are rinsed off, combined with massaging and the pouring of hot, warm and cold water from a bowl known as a tas. In this phase, you’ll luxuriate with a gommage and a foot and scalp massage. A couple of “rest periods” during the entire treatment give you time to relax, re-hydrate or shower yourself to a desired comfortable temperature, as you continue to benefit from the steam cleansing that is taking place throughout. Ever curious, I pressed my attendant (the inimitable Mario) for tidbits of trivia and discovered that around 65% of clients are female and the vast majority sport a tattoo!

If you have booked the “fully loaded” hamam, you’re off to a private room to lie on a stone bed (made comfortable by rubber and cloth sheets) for an invigorating scrub with rough cloth mitts called kese and then an olive oil soap (sabun) scrub-down, hair wash, and more light massaging and rinsing. If you add another treatment such as a full massage or facial to follow the hamam, well, search no further for Paradise!

If your treatment ends here, you will be led back to the initial room with the heated stone seats to slather your entire body with aloe vera gel and sip more tea. Finally, allow yourself to be escorted to the “quiet room,” where your therapist will bring you some ayran (a salty yogurt drink that helps your electrolytes to return to normal) and then invite you to rest there amongst the cushions for half an hour or so.

You’ll feel like a wet noodle, completely cleansed, relaxed and ready to take on the world! This is no ordinary spa treatment; I absolutely believe the reports that people will arrange to stop in Winnipeg just to experience this thoroughly well-done authentic hamam at Ten Spa. The combination of the visual aesthetics, skillful therapists and pristine conditions of Ten Spa make this treatment a winner worth enjoying again and again.

To add to the fun, the hamam room can be booked for between 6 and 12 people for a “Warm Mud Party!”
