Dominican Tourism Soared 19.5 percent in 2003

The number of tourists that visited the Dominican Republic in 2003 went up 19.5 percent from the year before as 3.2 million travelers made it the Caribbean nation, the countrys Central Bank (CB) informed in a press release. The report indicates that over half a million Dominican residents overseas were included in the abovementioned figure.

The CBs official report notes that the inflow of tourists and the amount of hard-currency revenues chalked up in 2003 are record highs for the local travel industry whose prospects for the ongoing year point to similar positive outcomes.

Banking authorities say that the nations leisure industry one of its top hard-currency makers- chipped in $3.1 billion in all, $380 million more than in 2002.

The press release points out that the previous record number of foreign arrivals to the nation was 2.9 million sunbathers scored in the year 2000, a mega bunch that spent $2.86 billion in the countrys hotels and resorts.

The Dominican Republic continues to be the leading Caribbean destination with an 18 percent overall growth, followed by Cuba with 13 percent, Jamaica (7 percent) and Puerto Rico (5 percent).
