LOCAL MARSH MONITORING VOLUNTERS NEEDED! SCIENCE NORTH SUDBURY TEAMS UP WITH BIRD STUDIES CANADA TO RECRUIT VOLUNTEERS

SUDBURY, ON – The preservation of our wetlands is becoming a hot topic in the Greater Sudbury area, and now local residents can play an active role as volunteers in the Marsh Monitoring Program!

Bird Studies Canada, in conjunction with Science North and the Sudbury Field Naturalists, is seeking volunteers to be trained as amphibian and/or bird monitors for wetland areas in Sudbury and the surrounding watersheds. A 10-hour per year time commitment is required, but no prior experience is necessary.

The Toronto Dominion Friends of the Environment Foundation has provided funding to increase wetland survey coverage in the Greater Sudbury region. An orientation and information session is being held Saturday, November 3rd from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Science North for anyone interested in taking part in the Marsh Monitoring Program.

The morning session is being held in the Science North Inco Cavern. Media are invited to attend at any point during the day, however the best time for photos will be at approximately 12:45 p.m. when participants take part in a Marsh Stomp at Lily Creek. Participants will join Kathy Jones, Aquatic Surveys Volunteer and Data Coordinator, and Kristen Harrison, Aquatic Surveys biologist, in a hands-on session that will allow them to learn more about how to identify amphibians and/or marsh birds. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

For more information about this event please contact Kathy Jones, Aquatic Surveys Volunteer and Data Coordinator at 519-586-3531 ext. 212 or 1-888-448-2473, or via email at aqsurvey@bsc-eoc.org
