Heli Canada Adventures November Newsletter
Fall and early winter are busy times for one of the team members here at Heli Canada Adventures: our dog Big Eddy out searching for socks under fallen logs and brush piles. No, we haven’t invented a new game for our clients! This is actually intensive training for Big Eddy, a 5½-year-old golden retriever/black shepherd mix and half of HCA’s CARDA-qualified Avalanche Dog Team. HCA owner and professional guide Bob Shafto is the other half, and is working just as hard, as he’s hiding the socks that are part of Big Eddy’s training program.
Bob and Big Eddy are fully qualified as avalanche rescuers by the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association, so every fall, they start training in case they’re needed to help search an avalanche area. Several socks are buried in the brush or in snow, and Big Eddy’s job is to find each of them systematically.
Bob doesn’t make it easy for him, either. Big Eddy works upwind of the items, often around distractions such as people looking for buried avalanche beacons, and he has to find all of the socks, not just one of them. Of course, he gets lots of praise when the last sock is found!
This sixth-generation working dog loves both his job and the snow – like all of us at HCA, he’s a true powder hound. We can sense snow in the air already!

Dog Training Tip!
Have you ever noticed your dog shy away from an object or water? Talking positively, go over to what ever your dog is shying away from and touch it repeatedly. Making the experience a positive one, you will find your dog interested in the object and come over. Lots of praise!!!
