Summer Fun Heats Up in Richmond, BC’s Stevenson Village
July, 2010 – Richmond, British Columbia: Float, peddle and paddle your way to the Historic Fishing Village of Steveston in southwest Richmond, British Columbia for hot summer fun this August as new dragon boat and cycling competitions join the Richmond Maritime Festival to fill your weekend calendar.
On Sunday, August 15, 2010 the inaugural Steveston Sockeye Spin is being presented by the Steveston Community Society. The Sockeye Spin is a Criterium cycle race with top men and women riders competing for cash prizes on a fast, picturesque course throughout the Steveston business core.
Come out and cheer on some of British Columbia’s best riders as they cycle through the streets of histoic Steveston with races running from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The race circuit is from No. 1 Road west on Moncton Street, south on 3rd Avenue, east on Bayview Street and north on No. 1 Road. There is a fun kids event as well. The 7th annual Richmond Maritime Festival returns to the Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site on August 20-22 with free fun for the whole family, including live entertainment, food from around the world, hands-on nautical displays and activities, and a floating showcase of historic and unique boats.
This year’s Maritime Festival also marks the arrival of the inaugural Steveston Dragon Boat Festival on August 21-22. With two days of racing, this new event will give dragon boat enthusiasts a chance to warm up their paddles and test their skill, while enjoying a fun-filled festival in the historic and beautiful surroundings of the Britannia Heritage Shipyard. Special attractions include an Adventure Race pitting dragon boat, canoe, kayak and inflatable boat. Newcomers can also try their hand at dragon boating or take it a step further by training Saturday and competing in a race on Sunday. Check out the traditional dragon eye-dotting ceremony on Saturday morning or dance the night away at a special free concert on Saturday night. A special fundraising barbecue will take place at 5:00 pm Saturday with proceeds going to the Richmond Food Bank and the Steveston Museum’s “Japanese Hospital” project. Other highlights of the Richmond Maritime Festival include three days of children’s activities with face painting, pirate hat making and pirate tattoos; roaming pirates and mascots; maritime exhibitors and demonstrations, including knot tying, rope making, model boat building and net mending; and tasty food and beverage offerings.
The public will also be able to visit the Shipyard’s numerous historical buildings, which feature informative and engaging displays and interactive activities depicting life in the West Coast fishing industry a century ago.
The Richmond Maritime Festival runs from Friday, August 20, noon – 5:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. Admission is free. In addition, music lovers can sample the popular Musical Expressions Summer Concert Series on Friday, August 20 at the Shipyard. Popular local performers Bruce Coughlan, Bob Kemmis and Cherelle Jardine will perform at 6:00 pm on Friday, August 20 at the Shipyard. Admission is $25. Tickets are available at the Shipyard.
