Sudbury, Ontario’s Famous Big Nickel Celebrates 45 Years
SUDBURY, ON – Members of the public are invited to celebrate the 45th birthday of the famous Big Nickel! This giant coin, the largest in the world, has become a symbol of Sudbury’s significance as a world mining centre and a favourite photo opportunity for tourists and Sudbury residents alike.
The Big Nickel was officially unveiled in Sudbury on July 22, 1964. On Wednesday, visitors to Dynamic Earth – Home of the Big Nickel, will take part in celebrations to mark the occasion. Everyone is welcome to visit Sudbury’s Earth sciences centre on July 22nd from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to enjoy a piece of birthday cake. Please note parking fees are in effect.
Some of the coins from the Inco coin collection will also be on display in the main lobby, free of charge, during the Big Nickel’s birthday celebration. The Inco Coin collection was donated to the Sudbury Science Centre in December 1982 by Inco Europe Limited. It includes an example of almost every type of modern coin in the world, minted up until the early 1980′s that contain nickel.
Members of the public are also encouraged to bring along their own coin collections, as a coin appraiser will be on hand during the birthday celebration.

f the permanent installations at Dynamic Earth. Visitors who pay admission to the centre can enjoy these exhibits as well. There’s always more to explore at Dynamic Earth! Visitors can also embark on an underground mining tour, explore two floors full of fascinating interactive exhibits, and discover Diamonds, a new special exhibition now on display in the MacLean Engineering Gallery. Don’t forget to visit the famous Big Nickel too!
