EARTH-TO-TABLE EXPERIENCE RECONNECTS METROPOLITANS WITH NATURE AT SONORA RESORT IN BC THIS SEASON
Sonora Island, B.C. – Picture being cast away on a secluded island without your emergency energy bar in your pocket or any convenient stores nearby. Who still knows what berries are safe to eat, which roots are nutritious? New to Sonora this season, the resort is offering its guests guided eco tours that reintroduce them to nature’s pantry. To tie in with the resort’s eco-friendly practices, the new experiential tours give guests the opportunity to experience nature and leave their business suits and woes behind.
Sonora’s edible journey is led by professional heritage interpreters who
will teach visitors the roots of British Columbia’s agricultural heritage.
The two-hour walking tour takes explorers through meadows, scrub bushes and
off trails, offering an educational experience on edible plants, Sonora
Island’s wildlife ecology, and glacier history. Participants on these
multi-sensory experiences learn how to leave behind only footprints when
exploring the terrains.
“Many of our guests, especially those living in metropolitan centres, tell
us they have lost their connection with the natural environment,” said Wynne
Powell, president of Sonora Resort. “We are excited to offer our guests the
possibility to learn about some of life’s basic needs and maybe reconnect
with a part of themselves they’ve forgotten.”
During the edible journeys, Sonora’s guests are given a survivor-like
scenario and have to scour a variety of terrains looking for seasonal food
like Salmon berries, clover roots, and blue camas bulbs – traditional
legumes of the local First Nations. The edible samples found on the
exploration will be discussed with the guide and processed together
according to ancient traditions.
Guests requesting the edible journey at Sonora will also have the
opportunity to tour the surrounding waters and wildlife at Sonora which
includes Orcas, Sea Lions, Eagles, Seals, and Dolphins.
