Cornucopia of Volunteering Service Campaigns Ready At The 16th Asian Games; More than 130,000 Sign-Up As Volunteers
GUANGZHOU, China – July 3, 2009 – The 16th Asian Games (www.gz2010.cn/en), part of the worldwide Olympic movement and governed by the Olympic Council of Asia has recorded 131,512 on-line registrations during its first phase recruitment of Games-time volunteers.Â

This first volunteer milestone was made as recruitment for the Asian Games began on April 21. It is estimated that 60,000 people will be recruited as Games-time volunteers for the Asian Games while some 500,000 city volunteers will also be recruited as well.

Many of the more than 131,000 potential volunteers made use of the 67 recruiting stations located throughout Guangzhou.

Volunteers are critical to the success of either an Olympic or Asian Games and the Guangzhou volunteers will be assigned to different sections to provide unique and high-standard services that will expand each individual’s personal skill sets in order to improve the overall quality of the Games. Reasonable rules and conditions for individual applications have been used and all volunteer appointments will be fully transparent to ensure equal and fair opportunity for each applicant.

At the 16th Asian Games, Games-time volunteers will receive:

- Accreditation card;
- Uniform and necessary equipment;
- Complimentary meals during service hours;
- Free public transport services in designated areas within the city;
- Personal accident insurance during their period of work and
- Volunteer service certificates and badges provided by GAGOC;

Each individual has the right to be a generalist volunteer, specialist volunteer or city volunteer when their appointment is made. Standardized recruitment policies will be in use as volunteers will be entitled to enjoy safe working conditions with all rights and entitlements provided to all volunteers.

Solicitation for the Volunteer Slogan and Volunteer Service Theme of the Asian Games was launched on March 3, 2009 and games organizers have received 768 replies via post and 6,532 e-mails received.

Addition to the volunteer recruitment, the Volunteer Slogan of the Asian Games will be “Together, we can make it better!” and the Volunteer Service Theme of the Asian Games is “Light up your life, become a volunteer!”

A volunteer recruitment will start in Guangdong Province in November; Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan this December with international recruitment slated to be launched in February 2010 and other provincial recruitment in March 2010.

Pre-Games volunteering training and rehearsal will be held along with a cornucopia of volunteering service campaigns yet to be announced.

Individual, teams and groups of volunteers showing exceptional public service will be granted honorary titles

The 16th Asian Games (www.gz2010.cn/en) is approved and governed by the Olympic Council of Asia and will be held in “Flower City” of Guangzhou from November 12 – 27, 2010. More than 12,000 athletes, trainers and coaches from 45 countries and regions will compete in 42 sports. More than 10,000 accredited and non-accredited worldwide media are anticipated to cover the Games with more than three million spectators expected to attend.
