A New Cruise Train & Incredible Bio-Diversity Have Me Thinking About Visiting Ecuador
by Bea Broda
Yesterday I attended a “travelling road show” that focused on the attractions offered in Ecuador, and quite a few of them caught my attention. From a variety of eco-systems to gastronomy that likes to stay traditional and farm-fresh, there are a number of ways to enjoy this South American country all year round, regardless of your interests. Of course, the Galapagos Islands are the country’s jewel, but other areas, such as the Pacific Region, have emerged with a huge fan base.

Auckland About to Face Zombie Tourism
Raising money to raise the dead is the aim of a trio of Australians intent on building a New Zealand-based zombie tourism company. Apocalypse Events Ltd was founded in February, and is gearing up to stage its first zombie apocalypse somewhere in Auckland in the coming months, with paying customers taking up roles as either the last remnants of humanity fighting for their survival, or one of the blood-thirsty horde trying to gorge on them. Even better, those portraying uninfected survivors get to make their own zombie movies if they choose to sport headcams throughout their battle for survival.

Palm Springs: Moguls, Mobsters and Movie Stars Launched California’s Desert Playland
by Bob Schulman
Dry air, year-round sunshine and healing mineral waters have been drawing the glitterati to Southern California’s desert playland ever since the first hotel opened here in 1886. Word soon got out that this spot — called la palma de la mano de Dios (palm of God’s hand) by the Cahuilla Indians’ local Aqua Caliente Band – was a great place to bat little balls around, tan up at the pool and hoist some cold ones (and maybe dry out after hoisting too many). In 1936, a reputed wiseguy from Detroit named Al Wertheimer added another big thing to do here: tossing dotted ivory cubes on green felt tables. Sure, it was illegal, but the country was in the Great Depression, and gambling could draw more visitors to the area, especially fun-loving movie stars, corporate moguls, railroad tycoons and oil barons. So local officials winked at Wertheimer’s casino and gave it a hearty thumbs-up (as long as he put it in neighboring Cathedral City). And so what if Wertheimer used to belong to Detroit’s notorious Purple Gang.
